Niacinamide for balanced skin without excess shine and dark spots

Niacinamide is one of the most versatile ingredients in Korean skincare. You'll find it in toners, serums, and creams, and it's used for oily skin, blemishes, facial redness, and uneven skin tone. That's exactly why it's often the first active ingredient we add to a routine.

At dglow we select Korean products with niacinamide that let you put together a simple, balanced routine. Niacinamide is considered a well-tolerated ingredient, so you can use it even when skin is oily and sensitive at the same time, or prone to redness.

What does niacinamide do for your skin?

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that works on several levels in the skin at once. That's why it's hard to place in just one category.

We most often reach for it when we want to:

  • calm pronounced shine and the feeling of oily skin on the face;
  • reduce the look of blemishes and clogged pores;
  • even out uneven skin tone and soften dark spots;
  • soothe facial redness;
  • support the skin barrier when skin is sensitive or irritated.

It's not a miracle ingredient and it doesn't work overnight. With regular use, though, it's one of the rare actives you can use long term and every day.

Niacinamide for oily and acne-prone skin

For oily skin we choose niacinamide mainly because it helps regulate the amount of sebum on the skin's surface. The goal isn't completely degreased skin, but skin that shines less during the day and whose pores clog more slowly.

We also often recommend niacinamide for acne when skin is sensitive to stronger products. Unlike acids or retinoids, niacinamide usually doesn't peel or dry out the skin, so it's easier to fit into a daily routine.

If you're looking for an acne serum or an acne cream, niacinamide is a sensible base that you can later complement with salicylic or azelaic acid. It's also worth noting that products can't permanently change pore size. With the right care, enlarged pores can stay less clogged and therefore look less noticeable.

Dark spots and uneven skin tone

Niacinamide is one of the more common ingredients found in products for dark spots. It works by affecting the transfer of pigment toward the skin's surface, so with regular use spots can gradually appear less pronounced.

When it comes to how to get rid of dark spots, it's important to be realistic. Facial hyperpigmentation doesn't disappear in a few days, and the first visible changes usually take several weeks of consistent use.

Whether you choose a serum or a cream for dark spots, daily SPF is an essential part of this routine. Without sun protection, spots deepen again, no matter how well the product was chosen.

Facial redness and a damaged skin barrier

We also often choose niacinamide for skin that reddens easily or reacts to changes. It supports the skin's natural protective function and helps reduce moisture loss through the surface.

When we suspect a damaged skin barrier, meaning skin that feels tight, stings, or flakes, we simplify the routine first. Niacinamide can stay in the routine during this period, while stronger acids and exfoliators are set aside for a while.

How to use a niacinamide face serum?

A face serum with niacinamide is applied to cleansed skin, before your moisturizer. You can use it in the morning, in the evening, or twice a day.

A simple routine looks like this:

  • gently cleanse your face;
  • apply toner or essence, if you use them;
  • apply the niacinamide serum;
  • finish with a moisturizer, and in the morning also with SPF.

Niacinamide combines well with most ingredients, including vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and Centella. If you also use acids or retinoids, it's better to split them into separate parts of the day. Not because the ingredients would cancel each other out, but because several strong actives at once irritate the skin more often.

How much niacinamide do you need?

More doesn't mean better. Products with a moderate share of niacinamide are often a better choice than the strongest formulas, because skin tolerates them more easily and you can use them longer.

When choosing, we care more about the complete formula, the texture, and whether the product fits the other steps of the routine than about the percentage on the packaging. The best face serum is the one you actually use regularly.

Niacinamide at dglow

At dglow we select Korean skincare with niacinamide in various forms: toners, essences, serums, ampoules, and creams. Among them you'll also find well-known formulas such as the Anua serum and the Beauty of Joseon serum.

Instead of building a routine from as many products as possible, we recommend identifying your main concern first. If shine bothers you most, you don't need the same products as for dark spots or redness. For oily skin you can pick a lighter cream for oily skin and a niacinamide serum, while for uneven tone you combine niacinamide with consistent sun protection.

That way the routine stays simple, and every step has its purpose.
