Nanos korejske SPF kreme Beauty of Joseon na obraz kot zadnji korak jutranje nege

The best anti-aging step? SPF, every day.

If I had to cut everything from my routine and keep one single anti-aging product, it wouldn't be retinol. Not peptides. Not vitamin C. I'd keep my SPF.

I know how that sounds. When I was building my first Korean skincare routine, serums were what I fell for too. Retinol, peptides and vitamin C promise visible results, and next to them SPF feels boring. But sun protection is the foundation if you want to prevent premature wrinkles, dark spots and loss of firmness.

SPF won't remove the wrinkles you already have. What it does is help prevent new damage caused by UV radiation. That's why the order matters: sort out your protection first, then build the rest of your routine around your goals.

Is SPF really anti-aging?

Yes, and that's not a marketing phrase. UV radiation accelerates what's known as photoaging. Over time it shows on the skin as fine and deeper wrinkles, reduced elasticity, uneven tone and dark spots.

A randomized study of 903 adults under 55 confirms it. After four and a half years, the group that applied sunscreen every day showed 24 percent less progression of visible skin aging than the group that used it at their own discretion.

That result doesn't mean SPF makes your skin 24 percent younger. It means daily use slowed the development of visible signs of photoaging. This is why the American Academy of Dermatology describes sun protection as the foundation of anti-aging care.

The sun ages your skin even when you don't burn

Sunburn is only one consequence of UV radiation. UVB rays are the main cause of burns. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to loss of elasticity, wrinkles and uneven pigmentation.

So protecting yourself only at the beach isn't enough. Your skin is exposed to UV while you walk, drive and run errands. The damage adds up quietly, without a visible burn.

What about retinol, vitamin C and other anti-aging products?

They still have their place in a routine, and I use them myself. Retinoids help with the look of fine lines and skin texture. Vitamin C works as an antioxidant. Peptides and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid support a smooth, cared-for look.

But none of these products replaces UV protection. SPF and actives are not an either-or choice. SPF is your morning baseline, and you choose the rest based on your skin's needs.

Do you still need SPF after summer?

Yes. I wear SPF every day, all year round. UV radiation is present even when it's cold or cloudy, so your skin needs protection in every season.

Make a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 the last step of your morning routine. For the face, SPF 50+ is the simple choice. Apply it to your face, neck, ears and other exposed areas.

In strong sun, on the slopes or in the mountains, add shade, a hat, sunglasses and clothing on top of your SPF.

How to apply SPF correctly

applying Korean sunscreen to the face

Apply it as the last step of your morning routine

SPF goes on after serum and moisturizer, and before makeup. If your SPF is hydrating enough, you may not need a separate cream underneath. Adjust the routine to your skin.

Use enough of it

For the face and neck, two full lines of product along the length of your index and middle finger are a useful rule of thumb. Don't forget your ears, hairline, neck and décolletage.

Reapply when you're outdoors

If you're outside, reapply roughly every two hours and after swimming, heavy sweating or toweling off. If you spend most of the day indoors, reapply before heading out for longer.

3 mistakes that stop your SPF from protecting you as expected

You only wear it in summer

UV radiation isn't tied to temperature. Even when it's cold outside, your skin still needs protection depending on the UV index and the time you spend outdoors.

You apply too little

For a long time this was my mistake too. The protection on the label applies to the amount the product was tested with. If you spread just a thin layer over your whole face, the actual protection is lower.

You rely on the SPF in your makeup

Foundations and BB creams are usually not applied in a large enough amount to reach the protection stated on the packaging. Treat makeup with SPF as a bonus and wear a dedicated sunscreen underneath.

Which Korean sunscreen should you choose?

A good SPF has to suit your skin and your mornings. If it feels pleasant to apply, you'll find it easier to wear every day and in a sufficient amount. At dglow I've curated the ones I use myself.

For a hydrating feel, choose ROUND LAB, which came with me to the seaside this summer, or BEAUTY OF JOSEON Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh. Both absorb quickly, leave no white cast and suit sensitive skin too.

If you prefer the light feel of a sun serum, take a look at SKIN1004. The formula hydrates the skin and leaves no greasy or sticky feel.

For a nourished, glowing finish, choose BEAUTY OF JOSEON Relief Sun. The cream is light, hydrating and comfortable under makeup.

You'll find all the options in the SPF collection at dglow.si.
